Webb Simpson Pulls An Upset At The US Open

Going into the final round of the US Open, Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell were co-leaders but many were within shooting distance.    Though, of all the names that were close, Webb Simpson was not high on the list to win it.    But he did!

Jim Furyk had the match in his grasp as Graeme rattled off a couple of bogeys early in his round.      Jim Furyk on the other hand was not giving away many shots, but was not able to get a birdies either.      That would be his ultimate undoing, that and a Duck hook on 16.      Not just any duck hook, it was a duck hook you would see on any local course you or I would play on.     In his defense, it was for the US Open, we duck hook with nothing but pride on the line.

That said, it was a huge error and one that would bring him back to the pack, while Webb Simpson was in the clubhouse already tied with him after shooting a 68, moving up 7 spots.       Johnny Miller kept talking about players going out and shooting 66 to win this tournament.    A 68 was what was needed, and it did help that Furyk shot a 4 over 74.

Furyk is mister steady, nothing flashy, just get it done.    Though as the round drug on, he took second looks at several putts and shots.     Every time he did, the results were not there.      He was taken out of his game.    I am not sure if it was the overall slow play of Graeme McDowell or the moment itself.      All I do know, is at times he looked extremely uncomfortable.     Who wouldn’t be, though of all the players you would not expect him to play the way he did late in that round.

And how can you talk about a Major without mentioning another MAJOR disappointment.     Tiger Woods.      He played poorly on Saturday, but found himself only 5 shots back on Sunday to start the round.    Well, he took care of that fast.    After the 4th whole, he was 8 over, and 9 strokes back.    It was all over at that point.    I give him some credit though, he did not quit and he ended up getting a couple birds to clean his round up.     But after 5 or 6 holes, he looked like a guy that really wanted to be doing anything but playing golf.

Webb and his Pregnant wife got to sit in a private room and watch the last couple of groups come in, and when the putt from Graeme McDowell did not drop, their faces were priceless.      His wife speaks out…”WE WON”?    Yes you did!    Here is the entire leader board.

We are now about Mid Way Through Sunday, And….

The worst part about the coverage today  on NBC are the people that scream out as the players hit a shot.     I wish golf course officials had the ability to use stun guns on these idiots.     Not sure if they are drunk, or just stupid, but it is really annoying and you only seem to see this type of thing in America.    Pretty Sad.

Lets worry less about Mobile Phones Golf Officials and more about the idiots that yell out “you da man” and crap like that.      TV pays for this tournaments with advertising throughout their coverage right.    How about enhancing our experience by eliminating this practice.     Put out a flyer or a rule that anyone caught will go to jail, prison, strung up by their eye lids….something.   Golf is no fun to watch with no sound…but I am almost forced to do so.

As mentioned midway through the round Sunday, Graeme McDowell is struggling a bit at this point, down 1.

Jim Furyk still at -1 and playing very steady as we should all expect.

Beau Hossler, the young amateur has finally hit upon some hard times, though only +5 after 9.     He is enjoying the moment by the looks of it.

Ernie Els is charging again, Monty predicted he would win today before the round.    Could be the kiss of death from a great player that could not win a Major in the US.

Tiger finished the round yesterday at +4, and after 3 holes was +8.     After about 4 holes, he looked like a guy that “wanted to get away”.

The Weather is Foggy and Murky..built for a European.     If you would like to continue to follow me, you can on Twitter @sportsmonger and on Sports Monger Radio every Friday Night at 11pm.

No One Under Par Mid Way Through 3rd Round…

Just a quick update, no one is under par midway through the 3rd round of the US Open.

Graeme McDowell, one of the guys I picked to win, is tied for the lead.

Tiger is 1 off the  lead, hitting every fairway though only 2 greens in Regulation through 8 holes.

The one very interesting  player I have seen is the Amateur Beau Hossler  who is 3 over and only 2 off the lead and playing very steady with a swing that reminds me of Monty.

Jim Furyk is a couple over but still leading overall.    The entire leader board has pretty much fallen back a couple of strokes.

Here is the remainder of the Scoreboard.
